Making the Business Case
Most customers who buy VersionOne trial it first. Since we’re easy to get up and running, a short trial gives them enough experience to ensure that VersionOne is the best agile project management tool for scaling their agile adoption. At the end of the trial, the team (or organization) knows that VersionOne is the right solution, but making the business case can be a little challenging. How do you monetize “visibility”?
A traditional approach to ROI would be to look at who uses VersionOne, how much time they will save, and the cost of their time. With a simple spreadsheet, you can enter some data do some calculations that say VersionOne will pay for itself by the time you’ve finished reading this post! Or sooner! Unfortunately, your spreadsheet may be easy to pick apart. Will the developers really save that much time?
Although the spreadsheet is helpful backup, I’ve never thought about VersionOne’s value that way. I tend to focus on the problems that VersionOne can solve by providing visibility across the organization. Engaging the entire project community allows the organization to make better, more intentional decisions. What is the cost savings or value created by publishing a release on time, as opposed to a week or two late because of not quickly removing an impediment? A story about a time when the organization made a bad decision because of lack of visibility will do more for your business case than a spreadsheet! Now you’re talking about a real problem that impacted the entire organization and you’ve transformed it from one where we’re spending money to one where we’re solving a problem that everyone understands.
