In this post we take a look at insights from the 11th annual State of Agile report and look at several trends we’ve seen over the past few years in agile adoption.

Agile is Global

Agile is GlobalIn 2014 86% of survey respondents were from Europe and North America. That number has decreased to 78% over the past two years. This is significant because the concepts of management 2.0 which are talked about in agile do not always mix well with some hierarchical business cultures. Agile is changing that and we are starting to see that shift in those business cultures.

Use of Agile in Outsourced Development Teams Has Been Stagnant… But Could Change

This could change with the growth of the Scaled Agile Framework® (SAFe®). There are many SAFe Program Consultants (SPCs) at various consulting firms. It is possible that the growth of SAFe will shape the future of outsourced development teams and increase the number of agile management practices.

We heard from a customer who said, “we don’t feel like we are letting the business down as much. We feel like the business is starting to get more engaged than they were before.” This is largely due to the team getting work done in shorter cycles and the business seeing that they are delivering faster. This is the output of better managing changing priorities.

Agile Initiative Success MeasurementOn-time delivery continues to hold the top spot in the list of measures of an agile initiative’s success, business value was cited as the second most popular measure of an agile initiative’s success, rising from fourth in the prior year. Business value has become a more popular measure of an agile initiative’s success and that is likely a result of organizations, from startups to large enterprises, now being able to better track and measure business value from agile portfolio planning through agile project management and continuous delivery.
